Introduction

Vitamin D may be obtained from the diet or by the action of ultraviolet (UV) B radiation on the skin. Despite Australia’s reputation as the “sunburnt country”, an increasing number of Australians are being diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency.

Deficiency rates vary according to the seasons (higher risk in winter) and across different latitudes (higher risk away from the equator). Other risk factors include older age, liver and kidney disorders, obesity, pigmented skin and sunscreen use.

The major function of vitamin D is to maintain serum calcium concentrations within an acceptable range. Related to this function is the well known role of vitamin D in the development and maintenance of healthy bones, with deficiency linked to bone disorders such as rickets, osteomalacia and osteoporosis.

Recent research is, however, revealing many more actions of vitamin D, including diverse roles in immune modulation, fall prevention in the elderly, cardiovascular health, muscle health, nervous system health, prostate health and healthy cell differentiation.1,2

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get enough vitamin D from sun exposure?

For adequate production of vitamin D in the skin, a moderately fair-skinned individual is recommended 6-8 minutes of sun exposure to the face, hands and arms on an typical Sydney summer’s day (avoiding the dangerous 10am to 3pm time slot), or 30 minutes on an typical Sydney winter’s day. Residents in cities north of Sydney will require less exposure, and those in cities south of Sydney will require more. People with highly pigmented skin may need 3-4 times this amount.1

The use of sunscreen, while blocking the damaging effects of UVB radiation on the skin, also blocks the body’s production of vitamin D in the skin.1 D3 1000IU capsules offer a convenient way of meeting vitamin D needs without increasing the risk of skin cancers.

D3 1000IU may also be used by those with medical or cultural reasons for limiting sun exposure. Additionally, it provides a higher dose for those who are already deficient.

Is it safe for me to take supplements with my current medications?

In many cases it is safe to combine nutritional supplements with pharmaceutical medications; however, there are always exceptions. Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare professional before adding a supplement to an existing regime.
