Introduction
The heart is one of the most active muscles of the body and requires an adequate supply of nutrients including coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), magnesium and vitamin E to maintain health.
Free radicals cause lipid peroxidation (LDL oxidation) which is involved in the build-up of plaque in the arteries. CoQ10 may help to reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. As powerful antioxidants alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and vitamin E also protect cell membranes from free radical damage.
Additionally, OptiCardio may assist athletes, the active and the elderly as these individuals may have increased requirements for both CoQ10 and magnesium.
Key Features and Benefits
- CoQ10 is required for energy production in the body and provides nutritional support for healthy heart muscle function. CoQ10 may also assist in reducing LDL cholesterol oxidation, which is thought to initiate the development of atherosclerosis.
- Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a fat- and water-soluble antioxidant which extends the functional capacities of other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, glutathione and CoQ10.
- Magnesium is essential for normal healthy nerve conduction and muscle contraction.
- Orotic acid assists as a mineral transporter, carrying magnesium into cells, and also provides active binding sites for magnesium within the heart.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is CoQ10?
CoQ10, or coenzyme Q10, is a nutrient found in virtually every cell in the body. It facilitates energy production, acts as an antioxidant, and also has the ability to recycle vitamin E in our bodies to further increase its antioxidant protection.18-20
Why do active people and athletes have higher requirements for CoQ10?
Our bodies are constantly breaking down molecules to simpler ones (e.g. carbohydrates to simple sugars) or building bigger molecules from simpler ones (e.g. making protein molecules from amino acids). These are processes of metabolism that require energy.
Aerobic metabolism is energy production that requires oxygen, and therefore also naturally produces free radicals. CoQ10 is a potent scavenger of free radicals and is concentrated in the energy centres of muscles. CoQ10 may therefore be beneficial for reducing the risk of free radical damage after aerobic exercise.21
Is it safe for me to take supplements with my current medications?
In many cases it is safe to combine nutritional and herbal supplements with pharmaceutical medications; however, there are always exceptions. Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare professional before adding a supplement to an existing regime.

Did You Know?
- Free radicals are potentially harmful chemicals that our bodies generate as part of normal day-to-day living. The formation of free radicals is the result of many normal cellular reactions in the body. External factors, including sun, pollutants, alcohol, cigarette smoke, pesticides, solvents and some medications, can generate excessive free radicals which may interfere with our cells’ ability to function optimally.
- CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid and vitamin E are potent antioxidants.
- CoQ10 levels within the body start to decline from the age of 20 years. By 80 years of age, CoQ10 levels will drop to below the levels at birth.22
