Introduction
SB Opti contains a beneficial yeast probiotic: Saccharomyces boulardii (SB). Numerous published research papers describe the benefits of SB. These benefits include promoting a healthy bacterial profile in the gastrointestinal tract; discouraging growth of pathogenic (disease-causing) micro-organisms; maintaining healthy bacterial levels during and after antibiotic use; helping to alleviate the symptoms diarrhoea, including traveller’s diarrhoea; promoting immune cell function; and reducing inflammation within the intestine. SB has few adverse effects or precautions and works in conjunction with bacterial probiotics such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. SB does not require refrigeration and so this product is a perfect travelling companion.

Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve heard a lot about the health benefits of probiotics and I would like to start taking them. Is SB Opti a probiotic?
Saccharomyces boulardii, or SB, is a unique probiotic. Firstly, it is a yeast; most probiotics are bacteria. Secondly, SB is not an ordinary yeast. It has a number of benefits such as natural antibiotic resistance and resistance to stomach acids; it has stronger survival properties than bacterial probiotics. Finally, unlike most bacterial probiotics, SB is not normally found in the gastrointestinal tract. It only functions while you are taking it. During this time, it may improve the intestinal environment and encourage the growth of the healthy bacteria, while discouraging the establishment and growth of unwanted micro-organisms.12
Taking SB Opti with a probiotic such as PharmaFoods OptiBiotic 45 is ideal.
I have been diagnosed with an intestinal overgrowth of the yeast Candida. If Saccharomyces boulardii is also a yeast, would it not aggravate my condition?
There is no evidence to suggest an increase in candida with the introduction of Saccharomyces boulardii (SB). They are completely different species. Animal studies have shown that the presence of SB does not increase candida levels but may actually have an antagonistic effect on candida.13
Although the human evidence on candida antagonism to date is not conclusive, taking SB Opti with PharmaFoods OptiBiotic 45 may help crowd out unwanted bacteria and yeasts while promoting and establishing a healthy gastrointestinal flora.

Did You Know?
- Diarrhoea is commonly associated with antibiotic use, as a large number of healthy intestinal bacteria are destroyed, allowing growth of pathogenic (disease-causing) organisms. Saccharomyces boulardii (SB) has been clinically studied and found to be beneficial in helping to maintain the levels of healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract during and after antibiotic use. Additionally, it is naturally resistant to antibiotics, which means it can be taken safely at the same time as antibiotics without losing its effectiveness. Taking SB Opti with OptiBiotic 45 is recommended during and after antibiotic therapy.14
- Research shows Saccharomyces boulardii (SB) may help in the relief of traveller’s diarrhoea. It discourages the establishment and growth of disease-causing bacteria. Additionally, Saccharomyces boulardii does not require refrigeration; it functions best at 37°C (normal body temperature). These factors make SB Opti an ideal travel companion.14
